Crossan is best known for his association with the Jesus Seminar, an organization of biblical scholars seeking to identify the authentic words and deeds of Jesus, as well as his controversial writings on the historical Jesus and the origins of Christianity. His titles include: God and Empire, The Historical Jesus, Jesus: A Revolutionary Biography, The Birth of Christianity and Who Killed Jesus?

In The Greatest Prayer, Crossan, a former Roman Catholic priest and professor emeritus of religious studies at DePaul University, argues that Christianity’s best-known invocation is misunderstood and undervalued in today’s society.

On Friday evening, 7:00 – 8:30 pm Crossan will begin the seminar with his opening lecture followed by a book signing. On Saturday he will present three more lectures that will lift up each section of Christianity’s most well-known prayer and explore how each phrase relates to the overall wisdom of the entire Bible

With just the right amount of history, scholarship and detail, Crossan’s goal will be to give us a vivid sense of what this revolutionary prayer must have meant in the lives of the men and women who first heard it, who first repeated it and who carefully preserved the prayer for us to enjoy two thousand years later. In making this connection, he will extend the prayer’s relevance right into the heart of our contemporary world, revealing its enduring meaning and universal significance.
