The scenic Gaviota Coast is home to wildlife, wildflowers, and an eco-minded school called Vista de las Cruces. One way kids learn about nature is through the garden program, which allows students to grow food and learn about the environment with hands-on experience. In an ode to food, the school is having a Garden Gala. The event begins with a viewing of Birke Baehr’s TED talk “What’s Wrong with Our Food System.” Next up is live music by Spencer the Gardener, followed by a tree planting in memory of “cherished community members” Bob Issacson, Mary Abercrombie, Ellen Mclaughlin, Pat Brown, and Caroline Henning. The celebration ends with a visit to the garden to meet the area Farmers Market farmers. Wednesday, May 29, 1-2:45 p.m., 9467 San Julian Road, Gaviota.
