DANCEworks Chooses Dendy
Acclaimed New York Choreographer Hits Santa Barbara in 2014
DANCEworks, the Santa Barbara-based annual dance festival, has announced it will bring New York choreographer Mark Dendy to town this spring. Between March 31 and April 26, 2014, Mark Dendy Dance and Theater Projects will enjoy a month-long residency on stage at the historic Lobero Theatre: A rare opportunity to create and rehearse new work in the performance space. Now in its fifth season, DANCEworks has in past years awarded residencies to dance artists Aszure Barton, Brian Brooks, Doug Elkins, and Larry Keigwin.
Dendy’s varied oeuvre ranges from experimental postmodern dance to Broadway choreography. Though rehearsals don’t begin for over six months, Dendy already has a title for the work he will create and premiere here: “Dystopian Distractions!” Taking a cue from the way our lives are bombarded by a 24-hour news cycle of economic and environmental disaster, political turmoil, and celebrity gossip, Dendy plans to weave a layered group work that questions the role of the artist in the socio-cultural landscape.
Mark your calendars now for Saturday, April 26, when Dendy’s dancers will perform at the Lobero. In addition to the culminating show, there will be open rehearsals, master classes, and other opportunities for the public to interact with the company over the course of April.
