Athletes Wear Skirts, Too

An article titled “Up Against the Condor Trial” is blatantly sexist and noninclusive. It generally tries to convey that a woman named Brittany Nielsen through-hiked the Condor Trail, which had never been done before and is an impressive athletic feat. Instead of focusing on that, writer Ray Ford spent half the article reporting on the fact that she wore a skirt when she arrived on the train, and everyone doubted she would be able to accomplish the hike. I guarantee you, if the hiker had been male, there would have been no mention of what he was wearing, and no one would have doubted his ability to hike this trail.

I would hope The Independent has higher standards for discouraging sexist reporting on female athletes.
