“Hope, where is the hope in me? / Can it be found, among the ghosts in me?” So begins Meteorites, as a world-weary Ian McCulloch existentially croons over guitarist Will Sergeant’s resplendent riffs on the title track. Further on, “Constantinople” is a Turkish delight of a tune showcasing Sergeant’s serpentine arabesques of guitar grandeur. Also noteworthy are “Lovers on the Run” — a descendant of “Bring On the Dancing Horses”; the anthemic “Burn It Down”; and the funky “Market Town.” On “New Horizons,” McColluch ponders: “Is this my sentence? / All this life as penitence?” Always deep, McColluch and Sergeant touch the heart and soul with this stellar album.
