Echo and the Bunnymen’s Resplendent Return

Stellar Record ‘Meteorites’ Touches Heart and Soul

“Hope, where is the hope in me? / Can it be found, among the ghosts in me?” So begins Meteorites, as a world-weary Ian McCulloch existentially croons over guitarist Will Sergeant’s resplendent riffs on the title track. Further on, “Constantinople” is a Turkish delight of a tune showcasing Sergeant’s serpentine arabesques of guitar grandeur. Also noteworthy are “Lovers on the Run” — a descendant of “Bring On the Dancing Horses”; the anthemic “Burn It Down”; and the funky “Market Town.” On “New Horizons,” McColluch ponders: “Is this my sentence? / All this life as penitence?” Always deep, McColluch and Sergeant touch the heart and soul with this stellar album. (Echo and the Bunnymen play The Majestic Ventura Theater on Sun., Oct. 9.)
