The magic number for Aaron Sharp and J.T. Service was 2:22:00-the time that would put them on the road to the Olympics. Sharp achieved it last December, finishing 10th at the California International Marathon in Sacramento in 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 24 seconds. Service broke the barrier in June, clocking 2:21:29 to place eighth at the Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota.
It may seem over-the-top to call a high school football matchup “The Big Game” in capitalized words, but that’s been the tradition for three generations of San Marcos and Santa Barbara High players. UCSB’s defending national soccer champions unveiled their version of David Beckham last Saturday night. Early in their exhibition game against Westmont College, the Gauchos were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out from the goal. Sophomore midfielder Ciaran O’Brien stepped forward and swung his foot into the ball.
