Three weeks ago, UCSB student Brent Pella launched his music video “Bike Path Love.” Since then the catchy and irreverent clip has generated more than 20,000 YouTube views and continues to be a hit in South Coast dorm rooms and offices, including this one.
The video chronicles Pella and producer friend Matt Pereira’s romantic exploits on UCSB’s network of bike paths as they rap, sing, and ride a tandem bike, all in white suits and swagger to match. Written and produced by Pella, Pereira, and DJ Matt Sproat, “Bike Path Love” has a memorable beat, clever lyrics, and high production value that have received rave reviews from students and faculty alike. In fact, UCSB’s head baseball coach, with whom Pella knows through his work as the Daily Nexus’s Sports Editor, told Pella that the team regularly plays the song on their bus for out of town games.
For Pella, who wrote “Bike Path Love” last summer, the video was an opportunity for him to combine his love of writing and music as well as a means to leave his legacy at UCSB. “I started directing music videos a year-and-a-half ago and, since then, I knew I wanted to make my own. Still, I wanted to make a music video in a different way that generated more entertainment value and I loved that we were able to bring some comedy into it. Also, since I’m a graduating senior, I wanted to do something that would leave my mark.”
Still, Pella is getting to live out some immediate fame during UCSB’s pre-graduation days. “Since the video went up on YouTube, I get stopped almost every night for pictures. I think the video just made a lot of people happy. For that four minutes or so, they got to fall in love on the bike path, too, which is great and what we wanted in making this video.”
