The Secret Class

One-man show, enacted by Magic Castle favorite Mark Haslam with original music by Andy Street, that brings to life how magic secrets are passed on and nurtured.

It was Street who approached the Ojai Art Center Theater with the idea to produce the show, calling his friend Haslam, “one of the world’s most talented close-up magicians…it’s a very classy piece, by the way.” Bean, who will travel from upstate New York to attend the show, said Haslam “transports even the most jaded audience members into a place of intelligent wit and inexplicable events.”

The show takes the audience back to Haslam’s youth in England’s Lake District, where he started performing in village halls and appeared on British TV at the age of 15. The show includes cinematic images by Marcus Dillistone, notably of the fictional hotel in which the show’s teenage hero learns his craft, and it also includes a fascinating appreciation of the protagonist’s early role model, Harry Houdini.
