The post-hardcore band Norma Jean is probably responsible for more cases of hearing loss than any other Christian rock band. But on The Anti-Mother the fivesome have taken a much more melodic route than normal. Of course, the purpose of hardcore is not be catchy—it’s supposed to melt your face and get your fists pumping—but “Robots 3 Humans 0” manages to do both with it’s big, punk rock hook. Afraid of coming off too soft, Norma Jean follows up “Robots” with a wall of static on “Death of the Anti-Mother.” Actually, The Anti-Mother’s pattern seems to couple a few traditional screamers with one or two more melodic tracks. But diehard metalcore fans need worry not—Norma Jean’s music won’t be taking home a Grammy anytime soon.
