Bomb Squad Responds to Grenade

Woman Dropped off Bag of Old Ammunition at Police Station

Santa Barbara police had to bring in the bomb squad after a woman dropped off a bag of old ammunition, including a hand grenade (later found to be inert) at the station Wednesday morning.

The woman - who dropped the bag off in the department’s lobby - intended for the ammunition to be destroyed, but when authorities found the grenade, “that sent bells and whistles off,” said Lt. Brent Mandrell.

According to Mandrell, authorities took the bag outside and taped off a safe area between two trash dumpsters before handling the grenade.
