The Best: See & Hear

This two-disc See & Hear compilation pairs a CD of classic Stax/Volt studio sides by Otis Redding with a DVD of amazing concert footage shot in Sweden by legendary director D.A. Pennebaker (of Don’t Look Back and Monterey Pop fame). You likely already have most of what’s on See & Hear, but then again you can never have too many copies of “Try a Little Tenderness” or “Pain in My Heart.” And unless you’re an avid collector, it’s unlikely you’ll have the footage on the DVD, which includes nine blazing tracks by Redding, along with three other outstanding performances-one by Booker T. and the MG’s, others by the immortal Sam and Dave. The sheer quality of these performances is something to behold, and the Swedish response to these love gods of soul is nothing short of ecstatic. It’s the perfect way to start your next dance party on the right foot.
