Goleta 9-10

With the Santa Barbara County Parks Department now seriously considering managed retreat-moving structures away from the shoreline-as a solution to beach erosion at Goleta Beach, the Goleta Water District general manager suggested that moving the water main currently running through the park near the ocean would cost the district at least $700,000-and even more if it had to be re-routed outside the park.

On 9/8, the Goleta Water District board of directors voted 5-0 to approve an agreement allowing the bond issue needed by the Cachuma Operations and Maintenance Board to initiate repairs and improvements for the South Coast’s 50-year-old water delivery system. The upgrades, which affect all South Coast water customers, can only be effected if the bond is approved by all Cachuma water recipients, but Carpinteria has yet to approve it.

Having declined Goleta Water District interim general manager Eric Ford’s offer to assume the post permanently when it was discovered that he had been investing district funds in a manner inconsistent with district policy, the Goleta Water Board of Directors is still looking for a new manager. An ad hoc committee informally interviewed two candidates this month, but no one has been selected.

The Goleta City Council held an informational meeting on 9/9 for massage therapists practicing within city limits. Recently signed into law by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bill SB731 provides a statewide certification program for massage therapists for the first time in the state’s history, prompting many locales to adopt a regulatory regimen. The council will further discuss the issue at its 9/15 meeting.
