The UCSB Office of Financial Aid is offering its online FAFSA tutorial to help students and prospective students complete the often-confusing form. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a lengthy form filled out by students and used by almost all colleges in the United States to determine students’ eligibility for federal, state, and college financial aid.

The FAFSA is also used by the Department of Education to determine need-based financial aid, but even students who don’t qualify for this type of aid often qualify for some form of aid, such as loans.

“7 Easy Steps to the FAFSA: A Student’s Guide to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid” will help students and parents navigate the application. According to a recent press release, more than 300 higher education institutions used the tutorial last year. The tutorial gives step-by-step instructions to complete the financial aid application process. The deadline to submit the FAFSA is March 2, 2010.
