This Hollywood-raised writer went to the Santa Barbara News-Press in the 1990s and came to this paper after the daily melted down. Our gain. “I feel like I have the best job in the solar system,” said Roshell, whose weekly column here pokes at the joys and frustrations of contemporary married-with-children life, and more. “I get to write about derby girls, breast milk cheese, and synonyms for synonym,” she said. “What could be better?” She’s also proudly releasing a new collection of her fave columns entitled Wife on the Edge, with a big party at Jeannine’s on November 11, so things are looking pretty good for distraught domesticity and the burning problems of wife in the Milky Way.

David & Julie, KTYD Morning Show

They’ve been at it for three years now and David Perry thinks the secret is to avoid gravity. “Besides my sparkling personality, I think the appeal of the show is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously,” he said, and it’s not an act. “You should see us off-air.” On the other hand Julie Ramos feels the appeal lies in being there when times get rough. “I’ve been here for seven years and I’ve seen KTYD morph into the place where people go when there’s a crisis,” she said, citing the station’s work during our recent devastating fires. “It’s the local angle,” she said. “And we’re not too serious,” said he. Their great memories of last year include interviewing Joe Perry in the studio. “And winning this,” said Ramos. “This was great, too.”

“I would guess that people like us because we are not a corporate radio station,” said general manager Eddie Gutierrez. “The music has changed. It was grunge 10 years ago and it’s indeed music now with your Vampire Weekends and Interpols. But we try to put on a little something for everyone. We can’t just play Korn, we’ve got to put some Jack Johnson on for older listeners. We know we own the 18-to-34 audience; but we’re trying to widen that appeal from 18 to 49, say. I’m stoked we won.”
