It seems like every time someone wants to criticize the city, they mention bulb-outs. Since when is making pedestrians safer a bad thing? I actually see cars stopping to let people cross the street when they step onto a bulb out where no car would stop before. Seems like a big improvement to me! Perhaps if these complainers got out of their cars and tried walking somewhere they would see how inhospitable drivers can sometimes be and see that bulb-outs really do work to make Santa Barbara a nicer place to live. Streets are for everyone, not just cars.
Hurray for Bulb-Outs

Inhospitable drivers indeed!
Today I was standing at the corner of Chapala and Victoria. A bicyclist was riding northbound on the left side (yes, its legal for a bicyclist to do so on a one-way street). He had the green light and was half-way across the intersection.
Suddenly, a fast moving car which was also in the left lane of Chapala entered the intersection and attempted to make a left to go eastbound on Victoria. The car's turn was horribly timed and it nearly hit the bicyclist. To make matters worse, the driver of the car honked his horn while making the turn as if the bicyclist was doing something wrong!
The bicyclist, unaware of the car approaching so close behind him, was clearly startled by the car's loud horn. Its a good thing the driver didn't cause the bicyclist to crash, where he could have been hit by other cars.
So speaking as an auto driver, bicyclist, and pedestrian, I agree there are lots of idiot drivers out there and bulb-outs do help protect pedestrian users from idiots like that driver.

I heard on Ventura evangelical radio that planners and people using terms like sustainability and bulb outs are part of a communist anti-american plot. Then I see how far the infiltration has occurred when Huell Howser, a 64 year old bachelor, aired an episode with him riding in Hanford, a predominantly conservative central California stronghold....with bulb outs everywhere. The people here that are against curb extensions are possessed and are simultaneously on a modern day witch hunt. And I wonder what our 3 "conservative" fanatics on the council would do for Hanford; a prayer vigil? Re-education camp? A burning of an urban planner at the stake?

I think Rob forgot to include other buzzwords, like "tax and spend liberal", "elitist", "death panel", "al gore's slideshow", "real american", "muslim", etc in his comment.

Is there actually any evidence that bulb-outs improve pedestrian safety?
