TOP SPORTING EVENTS: JUNE 1-12

The Santa Barbara Dons went down swinging, but a seventh-inning rally on the road was too little, too late, as Mission Viejo defeated them, 11-7, in the CIF Division 2 baseball semifinals Tuesday, May 31. Santa Barbara’s seniors now will be able to attend their graduation Thursday instead of playing for the championship at Dodger Stadium. They finished one of their best seasons with a 23-7 record.

Dos Pueblos High’s softball team also had to travel a distance Tuesday, and the Chargers came home in triumph. They upset top-seeded Aquinas, 4-1, in San Bernardino and will play for the CIF Division 4 championship on Saturday, June 4. Dos Pueblos (21-6) will face Fontana-Kaiser (20-10) at 12:30 p.m. at Deanna Manning Stadium at Irvine’s Barber Memorial Park.

The only other remaining high school competition of 2010-11 is the State Track & Field Meet at Buchanan High in Clovis this weekend. Among the area qualifiers are Dos Pueblos senior Nicholas Scarvelis, top-seeded in the shot put; and the San Marcos 4×400 girls relay team of Marie Brashears, Hannah McDaniel, Kaylin Koopmans and Elysia Hodges. They improved their time to 3:47.21, fifth fastest in the state, at the Southern Section Masters Meet.

The Brawlin’ Betties roller derby team will go for its fourth straight victory of the year on Saturday at the Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Downtown Santa Barbara will be teeming with runners – both humans and dogs – on Sunday morning during the annual State Street Mile. A series of races for all ages and abilities will start at the intersection of State and Pedregosa. The finish line is at De La Guerra.
