Social Justice Award: Being a globally minded, progressive town, it’s no wonder that the Fund for Santa Barbara’s Social Justice Award for Documentary Film has become such a compelling component to SBIFF. This year’s films in consideration are: A People Uncounted, about Europe’s gypsies; Aung San Suu Kyi: Lady of No Fear, about the Burmese freedom fighter; Dirty Energy, about the Deepwater Horizon spill; Give Up Tomorrow, about the Filipino justice system; Heist: Who Stole the American Dream? about organized money in the U.S.; Into the Current, about Burma’s political prisoners; Letters from Iran, about the Green Revolution aftermath; Pink Ribbons, Inc., about the breast cancer charity machine; and Putin’s Kiss, about a Russian woman’s coming of age. There’s also a Social Justice shorts program this year, with films about Costa Rica, Egypt, and the Keystone oil pipeline. A $25 (Platinum Pass-holders excepted) reservations-required filmmaker reception takes place on Friday, January 27, 5-7 p.m., at Sullivan Goss, 7 East Anapamu Street. Call (805) 962-9164 for reservations, or see fundforsantabarbara.org for information.

10-10-10: If you see some young folks toting cameras around State Street and acting out dramatic scenes on the sidewalk this week, you’re witnessing the 10-10-10 student filmmaker competition in action, in which 10 crews have 10 days to construct a 10-minute film. They’ll be judged by industry insiders, and then the winning films will be aired on the huge Arlington screen on Closing Night, February 5. See sbiff.org/events/10-10-10.

Applebox Flicks for Kids: For the sixth year in a row, SBIFF encourages kids of all ages to come see age-appropriate films on the big screen each weekend morning. This year’s selections, which all screen at the Arlington at 10 a.m., are: Red Dog (Sat., Jan. 28), Hugo (Sun., Jan. 29), Puss in Boots (Sat., Feb. 4), and Kung Fu Panda 2 (Sun., Feb. 5).

Audience Choice Award: Which film do you love most? Make sure to have your voice heard by tearing your ballot to indicate your rating for the film as part of the The Santa Barbara Independent‘s Audience Choice Award. The winning film will be announced as part of the Closing Night presentation, on Sunday, February 5, at the Arlington Theatre.

Flying A Exhibit: Did you know that Santa Barbara was the first Hollywood? Explore the history of early moviemaking here in The Flying A: Silent Film in Santa Barbara, an exhibition of photos, artifacts, and more from 1911 to 1921 currently up at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum until August 19. Tue.-Sat, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun. noon-5 p.m.; 136 E. De la Guerra St., (805) 966-1601, santabarbaramuseum.com.
