Sports Highlights: March 25-30

Brawlin’ Betties at Page Youth Center on Saturday

Santa Barbara High’s girls basketball team will not be on vacation as usual during this week’s spring break. The Dons are the first South Coast team to play in a CIF State Championship Final. The Southern California Regional champions (30-4) will face Northern California champion Modesto Christian (26-8) on Friday afternoon, March 28, at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. Both teams come into the showdown on 11-game winning streaks.

Westmont College made a quick exit from the NAIA Women’s Championships last week, losing to 20th-ranked Xavier, La., in the first round, 66-53. Senior forward Kelsie Sampson (26 points, 7 rebounds) went out in style.

UCSB junior swimmer Wade Allen has qualified for the Men’s NCAA Championships at Austin, Texas. He will be swimming the 50-yard freestyle on Thursday, March 27, the 100 freestyle on Friday, and the 100 butterfly on Saturday. Allen has set new school records in both the 50 (19.45) and 100 freestyle (43.26).

In a noteworthy result at last week’s Santa Barbara Easter Relays, Dos Pueblos High senior Stamatia Scarvelis set a record of 51 feet, 4 ½ inches in the girls shot put. Karen Freburg of San Luis Obispo set the previous mark of 50-10 ½ in 2001.

This weekend’s college highlights include the Big West Conference baseball series between visiting Hawai‘i and UCSB, which is ranked No. 10 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball; and SBCC’s Bash at the Beach softball tournament at Pershing Park.
