It's difficult to overstate the stupidity and self-destructiveness of the Patrick Windmiller firing. Not only was he the only guy in the weak IT department who knew jack about Macs, he was also the most responsive. Whenever I called him with a problem -- and with the crappy design software we use it happens a lot -- he was was always happy to be of assistance. Most of the others, aside from Josie, act like you've ruined their day by asking for help.

Man, we're screwed. Again.

David's right: Next up -- Juicy Preteen.

So long, Santa Barbara.

Congrats to Randy, Nick and the rest. We minions of Wendy love to see her thwarted. May this be just the beginning.

On News-Press, Indy Settle Lawsuit

Firing the sports and life editors is beyond stupid. Barry, in particular, worked like a dog to keep that section alive and relevant. Sports, in fact, was the best thing about the pathetic News-Press. Way to reward dedication to craft, Wendy.

I've also heard from reliable sources that no replacement is planned for Barry. Stupid, stupid, stupid. If you thought the N-P was a thin and weak, you ain't seen nothing yet.

On News-Press Axes Ten

I just the read the whole thing (no partying for me, alas) and it's a complete and nasty repudiation of the News-Press management. Judge Kokol repeatedly called Steepleton a liar and said Travis, Wendy and Von Weaselburger were, ahem, less than credible.

God, I wish I could've been there when Wendy got the news.

Congratulations to my friends in the newsroom! Happy New Year!

On Judge Says News-Press Violated Federal Labor Laws

OLofG is the best thing about El Fiasco.

And just wondering: what do you do when you travel? No street food? Good god, man, that would be a travesty. I still have saliva-inducing memories of a mystery meat BBQ from a street cart in Taegu, Korea. It was probably dog, but sweet Confucius -- what flavor!

For those of us who love to hike and camp there, this is most distressing. Thanks, Ray, for the updates.

Thanks, Lou, for standing up to Wendy.

On Lou Cannon Tears Up Wendy McCaw

I've noted this before, but santabarbarasblog is not blocked by the News-Press. Who is? It's a good list: the Independent, Ed Hat, the Sound, Blogabarbara, Craig Smith, George at Imnotonetoblogbut, MySpace, YouTube ... and others I'm probably missing. Determined N-Pers used to be able to go to banned sites via logu.in, but the Systems guys finally figured it out and blocked that, too.

If santabarbarasblog is a News-Press front it's a rather poor effort -- like the N-P these days. "Editor Bird" and his insipid posts seem to draw a pretty dim crowd. And let's not forget his shameless sucking up to the infamous Dr. Laura.

But you know what bugs me most about that thing? That he insists, as though it would give it heft, on calling it the Blog. Pretentious Crap, I say.

On Don’t Kick a Dead Dog In the Mouth While It's Down

Posted on June 29 at 9:01 a.m.

It's pretty obvious that Shotput is an ad exec at the N-P. He's just the sort of guy Wendy likes: somebody to do the dirty work without question or conscience.

Beware when somebody says "everyone" was doing something, like calling Ganibi a joke. It's hyperbolic BS, pure and simple, just more cheap character assassination from an N-P apologist.

If Ganibi was responsible for selling his own ads he was set up to fail. That's a ridiculous burden to put on a journalist trying to put out a magazine with a skeleton crew. It's also rather strange; in nearly 30 years in the business I've never heard of such an arrangement -- especially when the editor is an employee of a company that has its own ad staff.

Speaking of which, I have to wonder how much sweating the N-P's ad reps are doing. Circulation is in the toilet (I'm guessing it's way below what the last audit said, probably around 30K), and they've got to be feeling heat from their major advertisers. And now Travis is crapping where they live by going after Kristen Amyx and the chamber, which represents -- wait for it -- their advertisers! Brilliant.

Goodwillblogging is right; there are some good people left with decades of experience. I feel for them, because they deserve better than to see all they've worked for go down the toilet with Wendy's jihad against the community and her own employees. They know the N-P's a very bad joke now, and it must be painful.

Ah, but for the days when they had a real publisher, like Steve Ainsely. Those were the days ...
