Loved this article about Lori Gaskin! As one of the adjuncts at SBCC, I agree that she is very open, inclusive, and warm and committed to our students. And that is a terrific photo of her, Paul. It captures her love of fun and inviting everyone to have fun. You really got that. This is the first I read about a son and partner. Would love a follow up on her family... maybe a photo of her with her son and grandchild. And what does her partner do? Does he (or she) live here in Santa Barbara, or have a job somewhere else? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Mazel Tov on a job excellently done! Wow! What an impressive administrator! I hope you'll remain in Santa Barbara because you have so much to give our community. Thank you , Dr. Young for providing such leadership for students, staff and faculty. Clear, honest, authentic and straightforward. No wonder the students love you. And we're grateful you brought us your talented wife, JoAnne, too. M. Shapiro.

Thank you Starshine! I agree with you 100%. Thank you for the courage to say what so many of us believe: that no one is up there running the show. If there were a god, so many awful things would not be happening, such as all the children killed at Newtown Connecticut. People have always had anxiety about where we came from and what happens after death. Clearly many religions have tried to answer those questions and have succeeded in attracting many followers, because people want to believe that their father loves them and will take them home to him. If this faith gives them peace, good for them. I don't want to take that peace and comfort away from anyone. But like you, I believe in Science, which has to be proven rather than accepted on faith. And if we want a planet for our grandchildren to live on in the future, we had better listen to scientists and stop polluting our water and air and do everything to protect our environment from the corporate polluters.

Thanks so much, Nick Welch, for a wonderful column!!! And I agree with the well written comment by Tabatha. We all know that what is so outrageous about the Supreme Court Hobby Lobby decision is the precedent it sets. Sure there are other methods of birth control for the Hobby Lobby employees, but why should the decision of whether to use an IUD or pills be given to an employer who is not the one to use the method? And the next corporation, as Nick forsees, may reject pills and condoms in addition to the IUD and Plan B.
If your 12 year old daughter is raped and you want Plan B to protect her from pregnancy, if you work at Hobby Lobby, that will not be a covered option. This is why it friggin matters whether we get another Republican justice appointed. If you see how important this is in our everyday lives, talk to your friends and show them how our most personal rights will be further destroyed if Republicans are elected.

Always a great pleasure to read Starshine! SOOOOO well written. And always an intelligent point of view, unlike the commenter who thinks this administration has ruined his country. Many of us see it just the opposite. This administration has saved us from the ruinous mess made by the Republicans in starting Shock & Awe and then wondering why the countries in the middle east hate us. Because this President is so much more intelligent than the previous one, countries around the world now have a lot more respect for the US!

Thank you so much for that well written column, Barney!!! Most gun owners, I've read, do not agree with the NRA in opposing every possible effort to keep guns out of the hands of people who might be a real danger to others and to limit semi-automatic weapons to our military. One estimate says that more than 15,000 Americans have died from gun violence since the Newtown massacre. We should keep in mind that the NRA does not represent gun owners. It represents gun sellers. No wonder they don't want any restrictions. That would hurt their business. But if we can reduce that number, 15,000 Americans killed, the progressive politicians who fight for sensible gun restriction will earn support from a large segment of the population. OK, maybe not the gun sellers, but most reasonable people including gun owners.
And the gun owners have somehow joined forces with the Tea Party. The common thread between them is the idea that we need arms to defend ourselves from TYRANNY. You can tell tea party rhetoric by their anti-government stance, you know, people who hate single payer health insurance which so many other countries have and love, people who want to end Social Security, people who are against food stamps and any programs that help those who are struggling with multiple terrible-paying jobs or who have lost their jobs altogether. These Tea Party views are the opposite of progressive, forward looking, intelligent. Marian Shapiro

I agree with Robert Rich. Aceves is not endorsed by a single colleague who serves on the Goleta City Council with him. All the City Council members who are endorsing candidates in this race are endorsing Janet Wolf. They have worked with Aceves and they know he is NOT the one they want on the Board of Supervisors. I don't know what Aceves could have been thinking when he said all kinds of lies about Wolf, who is so respected and admired by a large segment of our community. I think he did himself in by those attacks. Then he runs his commercials trying to sound like Wolf. "I supported the environment and Goleta Beach." Pitiful.

What a Mensch, a beautiful person, David Selberg is!!! As the mother of a son just about his age, I have no doubt that his mother would be terribly proud of the work he has devoted his life to! It was a pure joy to read his answers. Thanks, David, for all the leadership you provide. So many in this community are grateful and appreciative.

I REALLY appreciate our council members for being concerned about traffic and views. Every time I'm facing the mountains, I think how beautiful they are, and maybe some people won't know what they'd be missing until there is a big building in the way. I say keep protecting the environment, the esthetic view and protect us from frustrating traffic jams. We want this community to retain it's small town atmosphere and not feel anything like LA.

I don't understand Aceves!!! I have voted for him twice and think he is a good guy basically, but Janet Wolf is a very loved and respected Democrat who works very hard for the environment and cares about people and civil rights and justice. Why would another Democrat run against her? It's stupidity. The active Democratic groups like Dem Women, Progressive Dems, WPC and the Dem Central Committee will be solidly behind Wolf, I'm guessing, and some have already endorsed her. Aceves should wait his turn.
