Ask the family and friends of Carloyn Samuels how safe the Las Positas bike paths are.

A segregated path is a great idea. We need more of those around. Make walking and biking safe and attractive as it leads to healthier people and less cars.

Thanks for a calm and reasonable article. As you may guess from my username, I'm a cyclist (and driver, and pedestrian). I've ridden in big packs and I've ridden solo or in small groups. These days mostly the last two because that's what I enjoy more.

It is quite literally a 2-way street. We all need to give respect to get respect. Not all cyclists are devils and not all drivers are saints. I try to go out of my way to be good to motorists as I know how maddening it can be when cyclists flaunt the law. I also want to be an example to other riders to not act like jerks on the road and cause problems for all of us.

Riding in a pack happens for several reasons - it's more efficient, it allows for training for races, and it makes one a better and safer rider. It's not possible to race well if you never ride in a big pack. Having said that, there is also no reason a big pack can't be aware of motorists and skinny-up when cars are coming to allow passing. Those at the back should keep eyes/ears on what's coming up behind and inform the group when a car comes, then the call should travel up the pack and everyone should move over asap. This is what our team actively did back when I was racing.

As for talking while riding, that's just part of the workout. When people go do workouts at the gym, do they sit and not talk to one another? How about any other exercise form? For me, I may be riding with friends I only get to talk to once every few weeks and it's a time to catch up while getting exercise in. We always go single file when there's not enough room or cars are coming up.

Lastly, PLEASE stop with the commenting about what riders wear! Why does that bother people so much? Last time I checked, people running, doing yoga, and playing football all wear tight spandex pants too. All those logos may be local businesses who paid money to be on the gear and the local team may use that money for good in the community. Does it bother you that a sponsor logo on someone's shirt may have resulted in a poor kid getting a free bike or helmet? How about if it funded trash clean up in a neglected area that's supposed to be a city center? (Both of these have happened recently in this area.)

Let's all be kind out there and let everyone enjoy their day and get home safely.

The problem as I see it is that the penalty of a short loss of license, 2 weeks of community service, and a fine that the family probably won't even sniff at is not going to give the kid any new outlook on things or be a reminder over the years that he killed someone.

5 years or less from now, it'll be all forgotten by the Maldonados, but will never be forgotten by the O'Neill's or his fiance.

What I don't understand:

The pursuit on 10/3 ended at 154/Cath Oaks w/ DePerna getting away.

The pursuit on Sat involved her again, and the SAME CAR.

How did she get the car back from the 154/Cath Oaks area? Did she just wait in the bushes until the cops left and then drove away?

Gotcha! I can attest to trains "sneaking up". It happened to me once when we were just crossing the tracks to hit the beach.

No noise, no horn, all of a sudden there's an Amtrak coming around the bend. We had looked both ways and were not dallying on the tracks, but one of our group came close to having to dive out of the way. It was on a pretty gentle bend too.

blahblah, they didn't have their fate thrust upon them, they CHOSE to go on the trestle instead of staying on the bluffs where the view is very nearly identical.

The dumb thing is they could've gotten the same photos/view by standing on the cliffs to the east of the trestle. There'd have been no danger even when the train passed. There is plenty of space there to cross the tracks and look at the view. There's even the same view without even crossing the tracks at all.

It's so disappointing the tribe feels the need to put up a 12 story building. There's nothing remotely close to that in the Valley. Is there even anything that tall in SB County?

It'll also bring increases in crime, DUI, accidents, traffic, etc.

I'd expect property values will decrease for those who live nearby.

But I guess it's ok because Armenta says they do their best to work with the community (yeah right!). Thanks for nothing.
