DOWNTOWN PROTEST:

Thu Apr 13, 2006 | 12:00pm

About 350 high school students waving Mexican and American flags
marched early Tuesday morning in protest of the immigration control
measures currently under consideration by Congress. The protesters
set out from Santa Barbara’s Eastside, stopped at City Hall, and
ultimately gathered at Santa Barbara High School. A contingent of
demonstrators met briefly with Santa Barbara Mayor Marty Blum and
then moved up State Street. No arrests were made, though police
reported feeling nervous when it appeared about 100 demonstrators
might block the freeway by Garden Street. In Santa Maria on Sunday,
an estimated 7,000 – 10,000 people marched peacefully along
downtown sidewalks.
