UNDER ONE ROOF

As their eviction deadline loomed near, the 25 Cedarwood
Apartments families remaining out of the original 51 huddled with
legal counsel to discuss their options. Third District Supervisor
Brooks Firestone expressed frustration that none of the tenants
took advantage of a concession Firestone procured from the
landlord’s attorney to allow them additional time to relocate on a
case-by-case basis, nor had they taken advantage of county housing
services. Firestone said he had assumed the Isla Vista Tenants
Union and nonprofit PUEBLO would promote these resources, but that
he planned to distribute handbills to the tenants. The tenants and
UCSB student activists have considered legally challenging the
evictions.

The Air Force announced Friday that it will transfer its Space
Control Center, which serves as the command and control hub for all
of the nation’s space surveillance activities, to Vandenberg Air
Force Base. This will involve the relocation of 140 military
personnel, civil servants, and contractors from the Cheyenne
Mountain Air Force Center in Colorado to Vandenberg during the
first six months of 2007.
