Some artists can’t remember a time before they practiced their chosen art form, while others are quick to recall the exact moment of their inspiration. Darion Smith, a native Santa Barbaran and a professional dancer and choreographer currently living in New York City, is clearly an artist of the latter variety.
Intimate was the word used to describe the evening’s program of performances by dancers Aida Amirkhanian, Susan Shaberman, Diana Cummins, and Narineh Ghazarians, and musician Nicole McKenzie.

NO USE FOR A CLEVER TITLE: For a band to still be playing shows together after 20 years is accomplishment enough, but to still be entertaining and enjoy doing it is like climbing Mt. Everest : twice. If that’s true, then consider the punk rock band No Use For a Name mountain-climbing rock stars.
Cinema and live theater are staples of a California culture industry whose impact radiates far and wide. Santa Barbara is no exception, with more than a dozen theaters constantly in operation showing everything from Hollywood blockbusters to original plays.
Jean-Luc Godard may have succeeded in coming up with the pithiest response to the new genre of “documentary” invented by Michael Moore: the “crockumentary.” Moore makes movies emboldened by great intentions, big subjects worth exploring and exposing, good jolly gonzo humor, and show biz monomania : and precious little of the fundamental values normally required of the documentary form as we’ve come to know it.
