Modern Dance Company Pilobolus Restructures

Named for a sun-loving variety of fungus and founded as a collective at Dartmouth College in 1971, Pilobolus Dance Theatre has developed a distinctively gymnastic style of movement involving complex, multi-Â-dancer lifts that are sometimes used to create the shadows of larger single forms.

Week Spot Photo – Lord of the Dance

In the mid ’90s, Michael Flatley took step dancing to great new heights with his almost inhuman leg flailing skills. And even though Flatley is no longer headlining, Lord of the Dance still lives on. Check out the current cast on Saturday, November 10, at the Arlington Theatre. Call 963-4408 for tickets.

Ira Glass

Sitting behind a desk blanketed with audio gear, This American Life host Ira Glass spent last Sunday afternoon creating an entire radio show in front of a Campbell Hall-filling audience. So dedicated was he to his image-free medium, the putative theater of the mind, that he performed the first five minutes in complete darkness.

The Gift of Anger

If there is one thing that plagues us mortals on the psychological front, it is the human emotion of anger. Too often, we want to flee from the Red-Eyed Monster, or wrestle him to the ground. Both strategies only leave him strutting about like a puffed-up, flight-suited George W. declaring victory in a never-ending war.

Late-Night Happy Hour at Ahi

Hungry Santa Barbarans might want to wait for the clock to hit 9:45 p.m. for Ahi Sushi’s izakaya-style late-night happy hour (hour and 15 minutes, actually-it runs ’til 11 p.m.). It’s a whole special menu of everything from sashimi to cleverly cooked dishes that might be confused for tapas-turning-Japanese. Given that Ahi serves up some of the town’s best sushi, this opportunity to munch a bit off the usual path should be welcomed with an open sake cup.

Father Benny Bavero 1918-2007

On October 12, 2007, at 10 p.m., the world lost a shining star, one of the most wonderful priests ever to grace our world. Father Benvenute (Benny) “Mike” Bavero, OFM, was the people’s priest. He was holy, humble, charismatic, brilliant, and innocent, and also a very handsome man of the cloth. He cared about everyone, no matter who they were. One man he cared for spiritually for 18 years was “Tim,” a prisoner currently serving a sentence for first-degree murder at Oregon State Penitentiary.

Palace Crowns Vasquez Executive Chef

Open since 1985 and having survived one ownership change, the Palace Grill has earned a place as an S.B. institution, bringing us closer to New Orleans via the best way to know that city-one’s stomach. Since July, the executive chef has been Galen Vasquez, an honored graduate of the hotel/restaurant/culinary program at Santa Barbara City College.

Bee Movie

It does not fare well when you’re obligated to be compared with that other Jerry Seinfeld masterstroke, namely the nine-season-long phenomenon known as Seinfeld. The latter was a great sitcom, famed for being “a show about nothing,” which puts it on the rarefied plane of an Oscar Wilde comedy or a Mozart opera-the triumph of fiendishly intricate artifice over an absurdly empty thematic core.
