UCSB received 54,758 applicants for enrollment next fall. The students who sent them will be vying for 4,100 spots for freshmen and 1,700 for transfers; compared to fall 2008, that’s 275 less of the former and 500 more of the latter. Overall, the number of freshmen applying to UCSB decreased by 2,352. UC-wide, there was a 2.9-percent increase in applicants, creating a record high for total applications to at least one of the nine state universities: 98,002. (/ucsb129)

UCSB scientists studying central serous chorioretinopathy-an eye disease that causes the retinas to detach and results in impaired vision-will be doing so for the next three years with a grant from the Pennsylvania Macula Vision Research Foundation, UCSB announced this week. Helping them in their research will also be the first-ever animal model for the ailment: a mouse suffering retinal detachment. (/retina129)
