False Economy

“The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize.”—Franklin D. Roosevelt.

In an economy that is facing serious downsizing, now more than ever is the time that children need to be educated. [“To the Bone,” 2/25/10]. I am a freshman at Laguna Blanca School. I am constantly being bombarded with the pressure of getting a good education in order to succeed, however, it is becoming increasingly clear that students at other schools, who are ultimately going to be faced with the same world as I am, are going to be doing so with a less well-rounded education.

I am at a loss to understand how students are expected to learn when they are crammed into a classroom with 34 other students and only one teacher. And I am appalled to hear that on top of the $6 million that has already been eliminated from the budget, there is more to come. — Zoe Hunter, Laguna Blanca School freshman
