Best Coast

Crazy For You

If timing is everything, Best Coast has got it all. On their recently released debut, Crazy For You, the L.A.-based duo dishes up 13 tracks’ worth of washed-out, sun-soaked tunes that embody summer lovin’. What sets the band (collectively singer-songwriter Bethany Cosentino and auxiliary music maker Bobb Bruno) apart from their fellow lo-fiers lies mostly in the vocals: Cosentino’s warbly deliveries channel The Breeders at some points, The Ronettes at others, providing a perfect counterpoint to Bruno’s intentionally sloppy guitar lines. In addition, Cosentino’s play-it-straight lyricism makes for a record that’s as no-nonsense as it is easy to swallow. On “Bratty B” she spends two minutes promising an ex that she “won’t be such a brat” if he comes back; for “Boyfriend” we get lines like, “the other girl is not like me/she’s prettier and skinnier.” Whether it’s genius or juvenile, we’re not quite sure, but it’s also summer, and Best Coast is making for the most perfect carefree, beachside soundtrack we’ve found thus far.
