Extra time was excruciating for UCSB men’s soccer and several other sports teams last weekend. In the second round of the NCAA soccer tournament, a 2-1 loss to Cal in overtime extinguished the Gauchos’ hopes of playing in the College Cup on their own field next month. The result generated a storm of controversy in Berkeley, as UCSB had to play a man down for most of the game after a questionable red card, and yet had a 1-0 lead with less than two minutes to play when Cal tied the score on a penalty kick. Also, there was disappointment but not finality at the Thunderdome, where the winless Gauchos women’s basketball team suffered a double OT defeat to Idaho. On the bright side, the Gauchos men’s basketball team prevailed over Fresno State, 69-54, as Orlando Johnson had career highs in points, 35, and rebounds, 11.
