UCSB Ranked No. 35 in World University Rankings

“I would like to offer my personal congratulations to the University of California, Santa Barbara on an exceptional result,” said Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011-12. “Our table of the top 200 represents approximately 1 percent of higher education institutions worldwide, so securing a place within it is an outstanding achievement. To do so, a university must score highly across our full range of indicators, but it should be noted that UCSB performed incredibly well for its research influence.”

The 2011-12 World University Rankings used a methodology developed with data supplied by Thomson Reuters. The rankings place less importance on reputation and heritage, and give more weight to hard measures of excellence in all three core elements of a university’s mission — research, teaching, and knowledge transfer.

The rankings include 13 separate performance indicators, across five categories: teaching, research, citation impact, industry income, and international mix. UCSB’s overall score in the rankings was 72.1, with scores of 55 in teaching, 65.3 in research, 99.9 in citation impact, 85 in industry income, and 52.6 in international mix. The 99.9 score in citation impact placed UCSB in a tie for third with Caltech. Princeton and Harvard were tied for first at 100, while Harvard and Stanford tied for fifth at 99.8.
