A man was killed Sunday afternoon after he sped through the northbound Highway 101 offramp near Orcutt and, losing control, struck a car traveling eastbound on East Clark Avenue.

The 62-year-old Guadalupe resident, who died at the scene, was driving at a high rate of speed and wasn’t able to navigate the turn as he reached Clark Avenue, said a CHP spokesperson.

The driver of the vehicle he broadsided, a 46-year-old Arroyo Grande woman, was trapped in her car after the accident. A passing motorist, who owns a private towing company and was driving one of his trucks, used ropes to secure the woman’s car and prevent it from rolling farther down the embankment it landed on.

County firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extract the woman, who was transported to the Marian Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The incident remains under investigation, said the CHP spokesperson.
