Let’s forget for a second that White Arrows’ latest appears to be titled after a line from Waterworld, the notoriously career-sinking Kevin Costner film from 1995. Luckily, the connection between the two stops at the title. Dry Land Is Not a Myth, the debut album from the Los Angeles indie rockers, is bubbling with infectious hooks, propulsive drum work, and a steady mix of worldly percussion and synthesized sounds. If there’s a complaint to be lodged with Dry Land, it’s that the record never establishes a cohesive feel. “Get Gone” is a slow groover brimming with electronic drum cracks, while “I Can Go” finds the band artfully working within more straightforward guitar rock constraints. But frontman Mickey Schiff nicely ties together the disparate parts with big, yelping vocals swaddled in reverb and delivered with conviction.
