Review: Yuna at SOhO Restaurant & Music Club
R&B Crooner Proved Her Vocal Prowess on Thursday, June 26
We live in the age of Auto-Tune, a time where you can show up to one of your favorite singer’s concerts only to discover the horror that what you thought was their real voice is not their own. Fortunately for anyone who came out to SOhO last Thursday, Yuna proved that she is one of the rare singers who actually sound better live than on record. Her infectiously joyful stage presence and stunning vocals made for a wonderful set that perfectly showcased why Yuna is one of the most exciting young voices in music today.
Yuna stepped on the stage with her trademark confidence and optimism and immediately captivated the audience with her gorgeously smooth vocals. Opening song “Falling,” set the tone for the rest of the show with its enchanting tone and R&B melodies. Yuna chose to mainly focus on the songs off her breakout album, Nocturnal, but she also offered up some deeper cuts. Perhaps the biggest reaction from fans came during her performance of “Lullaby,” as many were unable to contain their enthusiastic screams while Yuna sang the fun, dream-like song from her first album.
SOhO’s intimate setting proved the ideal spot for Yuna, who spent much of her time onstage connecting with the crowd, chatting up spectators, and saying thanks. The audience responded to Yuna’s charismatic and natural presence with decided enthusiasm, and many of the members of the crowd could not resist dancing during some of the more upbeat tunes. When Yuna finally left the stage after concluding with the anthemic and life-affirming “Rescue,” there was not a soul in the house who had not been caught up in the magic.
