Daniel Ash Peels Back the Layers

‘Stripped’ Reconfigures Some of the Singer’s Best Work

Stripped showcases some of Daniel Ash’s best tunes reconfigured and revitalized. It is the end product of a PledgeMusic drive that asked fans to contribute funds while also voting on which Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, and Daniel Ash solo songs they wanted to hear on a stripped-down album. The result is a winning compilation of intriguingly engaging re-renderings of some of the finest alternative music to appear since the post-punk era. “So Alive” kicks things off vibrantly with an endemic EDM ambiance, while “Slice of Life” and “Christian Says” are given coolly abrasive makeovers. “Mirror People,” though now drowned in synth, remains eerily trippy good fun. Meanwhile, “There’s Only One” is rendered eminently danceable and grooved out, and the dub reworking of “An American Dream” is ace.
