Cabin By The Sea Another Uplifting Night of Gypsy Jazz and Folk

On Thursday, May 12, SOhO hosted the Cabin by The Sea Series, a show where groovy bands and environmental non-profits come together under one roof to support wonderful music and great causes. The eight show produced in the Cabin by The Sea Series, this one benefited area non-profit, The Wilderness Youth Project, and featured three bands as entertainment: We Are Humans, Erisy Watt, and Royal Jelly Jive.

Watt is the event curator and sat down with me after the show for a quick chat, she explained her motivation for the series. “The idea is to both raise funds and awareness for different environmental non-profit organizations, while showcasing up-and-coming musicians,” she said. “We adorn the whole venue in cabin, cozy, living room vibes because it just creates for this welcoming family and neighborhood type of environment.”

SOhO was definitely decked out – there were multiple couches in the stage room and Christmas lights hung down from the ceiling beams. People were lounging all over the pseudo-living room, and they even had a few rugs for people to sit on. If you were looking for the most artisanal show in town that night, this was most likely it – let’s just say by the end of the night, SOhO’s Craft IPA was completely tapped. “I guess I’ll have to get a bottle of the Lagunitas? Is that all you have?” was a question I overheard from someone who looked like he walked out of a Portlandia sketch.

We Are Humans kicked off the night with some awesome tones. The band was fronted by Michael Sallstrom whose warm voice drew the audience in and ignited a romantic feeling within the music club. The band even featured a sitar player that added a very unique and tasteful tones to the band’s mix, they even covered the Beatles’ “Norweigan Wood,” which was phenomenal to hear with a true sitar.

Erisy Watt was next. As always, her voice wrapped the audience inside of its vibrato and then sent them floating off with stars dazzling above their heads. Royal Jelly Jive, from San Francisco, closed the show. The lead singer was another impressive force. Their swing rhythm coupled with modern resonance and even a Gorillaz cover made them incredibly exciting and invigorating. The club was fully rocking by the end of the show. Everyone was dancing, and many free spirits had their shoes off. Artisanal as they were, this was the type of crowd that partied without the real threat of broken glass, so they were able to get down with their good selves without any care in the world.

Overall, it was a friendly and uplifting night of sweet tunes and positive energy. The next Cabin by The Sea Series will be hosted on June 16 at SOhO.
