To air their grievances against anti-Black racism within Santa Barbara Unified School District, students and community members gathered at Tuesday night’s school board meeting. Many called for consequences to be dealt to the four students involved in a recent blackface incident at San Marcos High School.
Last month, four San Marcos students posed in a classroom with artificially darkened skin and posted themselves with the caption “meet the gc 🥷🥷🥷…” Since then, Santa Barbara’s Black community has reignited conversation around the racial inequality many Black students and educators have experienced within the district.
“This is how you get rid of teachers like me,” said Abel Gonzalez, the Black Studies teacher at San Marcos in whose class the incident took place.
