In March 2021, the City Council appointed the Independent Redistricting Commission (IRC) to prepare electoral district maps using the 2020 Census Bureau data, as required by City Charter Section 1301. The IRC consists of a panel of three retired California judges. As agreed in the 2015 Banales litigation settlement, the Charter requires the IRC to prepare new maps for the City’s six City Council districts.  These maps will govern City elections until 2030.

The IRC is deeply committed to encouraging maximum community participation from underrepresented communities.  As a result, the City of Santa Barbara will host the first of eight Community Hearings on September 20, 2021 from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. This first hearing will introduce the IRC to the community and will be held virtually. Community members are invited to attend this hearing to learn about the redistricting process and timeline, and discuss the October release of the preliminary draft maps.

En marzo de 2021, el Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad nombró a la Comisión Independiente de Redistritación (IRC) para preparar mapas de distritos electorales utilizando los datos de la Oficina del Censo de 2020, como lo requiere la Sección 1301 de los Estatutos de la Ciudad. El IRC consta de un panel de tres jueces jubilados de California. Como se acordó en el acuerdo del litigio de Banales de 2015, la Carta requiere que el IRC prepare nuevos mapas para los seis distritos del Concejo Municipal de la Ciudad. Estos mapas regirán las elecciones municipales hasta 2030.

El IRC está profundamente comprometido con fomentar la máxima participación comunitaria de las comunidades subrepresentadas. Como resultado, la ciudad de Santa Bárbara organizará la primera de ocho audiencias comunitarias el 20 de septiembre de las 6:00 p.m. a 7:30 pm. Esta primera audiencia presentará el IRC a la comunidad y se llevará a cabo virtualmente. Se invita a los miembros de la comunidad a asistir a esta audiencia para aprender sobre el proceso de redistritación y el cronograma, y discutir los mapas preliminaries que seran publicados en octubre.
