Based upon the classic motion picture, the theatrical production of “The Wizard Of Oz” was adapted by John Kane, based upon L. Frank Baum’s novel with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg. Kansas born Dorothy Gale and her dog Toto get transported to a magical land known as Oz. There, Dorothy accidentally crushes the Wicked Witch of the East, causing the Wicked Witch of the West to antagonize Dorothy. To find her way back home, Dorothy must see the powerful Wizard of Oz. On Dorothy’s journey home she meets the Scarecrow (who wants a brain), the Tin Man (who longs for a heart), and the cowardly Lion (who is in search of courage). Once they meet the Wizard, they discover that what they have been searching for has been in them all along.

The Carpinteria High School Muses, the CHS Performing Arts theater production class, has been a part of the high school and Carpinteria community since 1981, when it was founded by then-CHS principal Ray Hill. According to its Mission Statement, “Muses is dedicated to the belief that theater training promotes self-esteem, builds confidence, stimulates creativity, sharpens communication skills, fosters an appreciation of teamwork, raises cultural awareness, celebrates diversity, encourages respect for self and others and lays the foundation for a lifelong love of the arts.”
