On this week’s Poodle Radio, Colin Marshall talks first to photographer MacDuff Everton and artist Mary Heebner, who have collaborated on a new photo book, The Book of Santa Barbara. The project documents countless views of this city not seen in all the standard-issue postcard imagery, including occasional non-blue skies and fascinating community members who aren’t international celebrities. Featuring an introduction by well-known writer and part-time Santa Barbara resident Pico Iyer, the book approaches Santa Barbara as a real, living, breathing, complicated place rather than a caricature of seaside idyll.

Then Phil Gilley and Rod Hare of Notes for Notes visit the studio to talk about their operation, which runs fully-equipped music creation spaces — sometimes even equipped with players like Jack Johnson — for the kids and teenagers of Santa Barbara. Their benefit party, “Musical Sound Check”, happens on Friday, December 3. You can tune into Poodle Radio live every Tuesday morning from 8-9 a.m. on KCSB, 91.9 FM in Santa Barbara or on KCSB’s webcast at KCSB.org.
