On this week’s Poodle Radio, perhaps its most packed broadcast ever, Colin Marshall is joined first by Mark Christensen, author of Acid Christ: Ken Kesey, LSD, and the Politics of Ecstasy. The book is both a biography of Kesey, the divisive 1960s cultural figure who wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and went on to lead the pro-hallucinogen Merry Pranksters, and Christensen’s own story of getting involved with Kesey and his coterie as a youngster. Kesey’s message of absolute freedom was, according to Christensen, more than tantalizing to a teenager, though the man who preached it had both numerous internal contradictions and a serious dictatorial side.
Then, food editor George Yatchisin rolls in to briefly discuss the inaugural Foodies, the Indy’s brand new food awards. They’ll celebrate culinary triumphs like great sushi in unexpected places, the most effective dishes to kill your hangover, and lifetime achievements in cooking and serving right here in S.B. For the final segment, pop culture editor and Poodle Radio music producer Aly Comingore brings in her intern Alex Khatchadourian to talk about the mammoth task they’ve recently finished: sorting through all the submissions sent in to the Indy’s annual band contest. They talk about which kinds of music were popular, which were surprising, and which might be best for the soundtrack to your next party boat cruise.
