An inspiring professor, passed away peacefully Sept. 7 at Sarah House hospice in Santa Barbara, age 71.
Raised in Santa Barbara by parents George and Zelda, Larry earned his degrees at UC Santa Barbara where he taught political science and religious studies until moving to New York City to teach at Bernard Baruch College, CUNY, for 25 years, retiring to Santa Barbara in 1996.
Larry’s intellect and wry humor captivated students and colleagues, filling his classes and fueling political activism, especially for JFK, RFK, social justice and peace. Dr. Adams was a scholar who studied, lectured and wrote on diverse topics, including a book on political columnist Walter Lippman and theologian Reinhold Niebuhr.
Larry outwardly minimized his life-long health battles with hemophilia but his beloved UCSB community rallied with annual Larry Adams blood drives.
Larry is survived by cousins Rod Horten, Phoenix AZ, Heidi Horten-Stephenson, Lafayette, CO and countless friends and students. Larry’s sister Sheri McDowell predeceased him.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal, 1500 State St, Santa Barbara Sat. Oct. 13 at 11:00 a.m.. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Larry Adams Scholars, apublic policy student internship named for him, UCSB Foundation, Santa Barbara 93106 or Sarah House, 2612 Modoc Rd., Santa Barbara 93105.
We will learn from you forever, Larry.
