The Abstract Art Collective (AAC) will be holding an exhibition and fundraiser featuring over 70 abstract artists’ works. Bacara is sponsoring the event. Abstract works offered for sale include pieces from notable artists such as Laurie MacMillan, Karin Aggeler, Wayne Hoffman and Christa Lyons, whose “Breakfast In Space” hangs in Mayor Schneider’s office. The AAC’s Bacara show will be juried by Brad Nack, Curator for Michael Kate Interiors and Gallery. The event will be AAC’s first beneficiary event for The Waldorf School of Santa Barbara.
The arts at The Waldorf School of Santa Barbara are an integral part of the curriculum, supporting development of the growing emotional core of each child. Waldorf is a perfect fit as a beneficiary for the Abstract Art Collective’s inaugural fundraiser. The Collective was founded in 2011 to showcase the work of contemporary artists on the Central Coast. One of the AAC founders, J. T. Turner, runs a non-profit mental health agency, Phoenix of Santa Barbara, which has been the beneficiary of an annual art show. Turner says, “This is a great opportunity for the Abstract Art Collective to sponsor a show that will benefit a local worthwhile cause. We chose the Waldorf School of Santa Barbara because they place artistic endeavors at the center of a child’s education.”
The AAC exhibit and fundraiser at Bacara will also include a series of contemporary 8” x 8” works hung on one wall resembling a patchwork quilt. The 8x8 artwork will be donated by exhibiting AAC artists and will sell for $35 each. All of the proceeds from those pieces will benefit Waldorf Santa Barbara. Waldorf will also receive 40 percent of the proceeds from the larger pieces in the exhibit. The art exhibition/benefit and reception will be open to the public at no charge. Show hours are 10am–6pm August 31, and 10am–5pm September 1, with a special reception on September 1, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Bacara Resort and Spa is located at 8301 Hollister Ave in Goleta.
The Abstract Art Collective (AAC) consists of a group of 60 Santa Barbara artists that was founded in 2011 by Thore Edgren and J. T. Turner. The group’s premier opening was at the Cabrillo Pavilion Arts Center in March 2012. Since then, the AAC has exhibited at various Santa Barbara venues, including SOHO, Santa Barbara College of Law, UCSB Faculty Club, CASA Gallery, the Goleta Library, and the Bronfman Jewish Community Center.
The Abstract Art Collective’s vision is to provide a platform for contemporary artists in a region historically dominated by landscape art. To join, artists present their work to a Membership Committee. There is an annual membership fee and entry fee for each show. Artists interested in joining the AAC can call (805) 637-8886.
