County Fire Investigators look for evidence near the point where the Gap Fire began Tuesday evening. Fire started on the left, just outside the photo.

As flames burned closer and closer to the ranch lands immediately behind Goleta, four investigators from the Santa Barbara County Fire Department methodically sifted through bits of trash and other debris at the point where the Gap Fire began Tuesday night.

Earlier that morning I received a tip from a person who wished to remain anonymous that the point of origin was the site of an informal shooting range known as the “Glass Factory” that was used in the 1960s and 70s for target practice.

Located east of the Winchester Gun Club, when fire fighters first reached the scene, they quickly located the point of origin, a sandy bench located at the base of a hill where decades ago shooters had placed old TVs, washing machines and other discarded items to use as targets.

My source indicated that a half-full cola can was found there along with several other items. Apparently, the soft drink was still cold to the touch.

Several members of the San Marcos Volunteer Fire Department were the first on scene, arriving there within 15 minutes of it being reported. As they drove up West Camino Cielo they passed an SUV with three people in it and loaded with mountain bikes. The volunteers stopped the car and asked the occupants if they had seen a fire.

Apparently, when the call came in to CHP, the reporting party mentioned that the fire was near a private ranch known as Windemere but this was confused with another location along San Marcos Pass called “Windy Gap." More than likely, the Gap Fire received its name from this confusion in names.

The mountain bikers affirmed that the fire was, indeed, further up the road towards the Winchester Gun Club. Unfortunately, because they wanted to get to the fire as soon as they could, the volunteers did not get the car’s license number.

While the San Marcos volunteers would not confirm that the start point for the Gap Fire was the Glass Factory, when I re-visited West Camino Cielo at 7 pm last night, I could observe the team at work picking up various items and placing some of them in small paper bags. When asked, the investigators declined to comment on their work.

While the cause of the Gap Fire is clearly human, at this point there is no indication whether it was accidental or intentional. One wonders who the person or persons are who were responsible for this and what they could have been thinking.

The best, most accurate map so far! Thanks Ray!

Ray, tx for the info and pushpins.
What is the timestamp for the fire perimiter you posted around 11:15 Thur am. You best "current estimate" or as of last night sometime?
At 0100h the bearing from the corner of Kellogg and C'Oaks to the very active SW corner of the fire was about 310 deg True -- consistent with your map. But judging from fire engine headlights, at the same time the fire was 15- to 300 yds above the cat road that follows that portion of your maps border. The western border of your map is consistent with my observation from SBA at 2300h last night. So by now, it may be closer to the Fairview line. Inciweb finally updated at 1230 pm, but still no map. I'm heading out for a look. I may stop by the S.O.

Great - we were curious how the fire got the name "GAP". Thanks Ray!

This is a bit confusing since the shooting area now called the Glass Factory is over on East Camino Cielo. This must be referring to its former location.

That's an odd caption for the photo showing the fire investigators searching for clues. For a place purportedly being "the point where the Gap Fire began" it appears remarkably free from even the slightest trace of fire damage.

As usual, excellent fire coverage that's unavailable from any other local news outlet. Thanks!

My observation suggests the fire first concentrated above Bartlett Canyon, west of the Playground. There are no official trails here but there was a lot of active trail cutting the past year or so for reasons unknown. These originate below West Camino Cielo from the Windermere Ranch all the way west to Lizards Mouth. Hikers and climbers use several older ones in the area heading downhill, such as from Lizards Mouth to McCoy Canyon, going over the hill with the wooden shack to some boulders, down to the Brickyard bouldering area and Arrowhead Springs and finally the other more popular one into the Playground. Arrowhead Springs, a well known Chumash art site, appears to be close to ground zero. The more recent unofficial trail work ran in many directions for no apparent purpose. The only shooting area east of the Winchester Gun Club used to be above the Brickyard a long time ago and then moved to east of La Cumbre Peak, as noted here, and miles away from the Gap fire origin.

The earliest usages of "GAP Fire" had GAP as shown, all upper case, which would normally indicate an acronym. Since it was initially characterized as affecting the Glen Annie-La Patera area, it seems logical that GAP came from _G_len _A_nnie _P_atera... Windy Gap wasn't mentioned at all, that I saw, in the first day or so...
