Adeline Records; July 2008
Timmy Curran is best known to lay folk as one of the greatest surfers in the world. But now that he’s retired, Curran has branched out into music in more ways than one. Although he began as a producer of other people’s tunes, his new LP, Word of Mouth, does a solid job of showcasing Curran’s own laid-back indie sound. But although the songs are occasionally nice to listen to, it seems as though Curran is kind of playing it safe with this one. His melodies disappoint, and his lyrics are nothing especially forward-thinking. Some songs are better than the average though, with “Lonely” being the standout star. Curran may out-surf Jack Johnson, but in the studio, he’s simply not as good.
