Yahoo!Former 2nd District Planning Commissioner Doreen Farr picked up a big endorsement in her quest for Santa Barbara County’s 3rd District seat, receiving the endorsement of the Sierra Club’s Los Padres chapter.
The June 3 election “could well determine the future of environmental protection and stewardship” in the county, according to the Sierra Club’s press release. The group gave all five candidates in the race to replace current Supervisor Brooks Firestone an opportunity to talk about their positions on key issues.
“We are elated to endorse someone who has demonstrated leadership on the issues our Chapter cares about most — from traditional Sierra Club concerns with forest management and wilderness to the growing challenges with land use, coastal protection and energy development,” said chapter political committee co-chair Fran Farina in a statement. Farina cited Farr’s priorities of housing workers, preserving agriculture and protecting open space, especially along the Gaviota Coast.
“I’m heartened that people are rallying to preserve Santa Barbara’s natural wonders and resisting urban sprawl and development pressures,” Farr said in the statement. “While virtually all our community’s environmental leaders have endorsed me individually, the local Sierra Club Chapter’s endorsement will be a beacon for voters that I’m the best environmental candidate in this tough race.”
Farr is facing off against four others in this hotly contested election — Buellton City Councilmember Victoria Pointer, current Santa Ynez School Board President Steve Pappas, former Firestone aide David Smyser, ands South Coast physician David Bearman. All five have professed similar interests in preserving agricultural land and the Gaviota Coast.
