Longtime KJEE morning show personalities Spencer Fischer and his partner-in-crime Adam Lundquist are out as hosts of the popular program on 92.9 FM, and will be replaced come January 4 by a syndicated morning talk show out of Los Angeles.
Morning commuters will only have to go up the dial a few notches to find Fischer, however, as he’ll be taking a seat behind the microphone in the studio of KVYB 103.3 FM as that station’s new morning host. Lundquist’s story is a little more somber, as he doesn’t have another radio job lined up.
KJEE, meanwhile, will be replacing the popular morning show hosts with the syndicated Kevin and Bean Show, which is aired on KROQ in Los Angeles. That show, which is going on 20 years of existence, began syndication in several markets in May 2009.
Citing economic reasons, management at KJEE told Fischer and Lundquist of their plans to can the morning show on, ironically, Friday, November 13, just after Lundquist spent a good chunk of the show spitting in the face of all sorts of urban legends supposed to give people bad luck. KJEE’s Stephen Meade, a former deejay himself who is now the station’s sales manager, cited not only the economy, but the opportunity to bring in quality entertainment and “solidifying our connection with the modern rock world” as reasons behind the step to the popular KROQ show.
The two, who have been dropping hints on their show for weeks, had been flying as a tandem in the 6 to 10 a.m. slot for KJEE since the show’s third member, Jenny Schlax, left in October 2008 after two-and-a-half years of the three working on the show together. With Fischer and Lundquist at the helm, KJEE’s morning show managed to pull good ratings in Santa Barbara as one of the more popular programs. Most recently, the show received The Indy‘s 2009 “Best Of” Award for radio morning show. “We had a lot of momentum we didn’t want to lose,” Fischer said.
Lundquist was gone on a vacation for the last couple of days of the show’s airing, while Fischer hosted Thursday’s show and was not quiet about it being his last with KJEE. Friday will be a countdown of the year’s best shows not hosted by the duo.
Even people not familiar with KJEE’s morning show have probably encountered Fischer, who has been with the station for 12 years and is one of the few Santa Barbarans known primarily by his first name only. Not only is Spencer a staple at most any event catering to the twenty-something crowd where a deejay or emcee is needed in Santa Barbara, he also deejays weddings and does promotion work. His voice can also be heard in several local television and radio advertising spots. “Spencer’s been a household name in Santa Barbara for a long time,” said Bruce Pollock, the Central Coast market manager for Cumulus Media, which owns KVYB.
Lundquist, meanwhile, a recent graduate of UCSB, has been making a name for himself around town for his wacky interviews of celebrities, athletes, and politicians. He’s asked former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton who she would “do” if her husband gave her a “freebie,” basketball player Sam Cassell if he thought he looked more like E.T. or Gollum from Lord of the Rings, and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger if he had the option of kicking one past or present politician’s ass, who would it be.
Hoping to stay in radio, Lundquist, 27, who plans to work the KJEE sound board for a while and hopes to continue doing sports reports, said he is “certainly willing to look at job offers.” And Fischer said someone should hire him “That guy is going to give you 100 percent, whether it’s mowing lawns or being a broadcaster,” said Fischer. Lundquist started with the morning show covering sports, and said he loved interacting with people, whether it was hosting Sunday football at Sharkee’s or Nite Moves on the beach. “It’s always about the people,” he said. “It was just a fun job.”
While the show’s current ratings weren’t immediately available, both the morning show guys and Meade said the show got good marks. While it remains to be seen what the changes mean for KJEE, Fischer said it does sound as if more changes are on the way, as he was told the end of the morning show was only phase one. Without getting specific, Meade said the station is “constantly evolving,” just like music and radio in general. Ever in search of the “next trend,” Meade explained, “Are we going to be reactive or proactive? I hope that we’ll be proactive.”
For KJEE, which operates a signal of approximately 820 watts, the change means the loss of a live and local show during the morning drive time in exchange for a presumably cheaper, piped-in program. That leaves only K-LITE 101.7 FM, KRUZ 97.5 FM, and KTYD 99.9 FM as Santa Barbara-based stations with local and live-hosted morning programming. (While KVYB’s signal hits S.B., it is based in Ventura County.) And to some, that’s the biggest drawback of this budget-trimming measure. “They’re not doing the community a service by having Kevin and Bean in the morning,” explained one disgruntled KJEE morning show listener.
Lundquist agreed, saying, “We’ll see how important people think local shows are.” The locally produced show, explained Fischer, allowed the station to cover breaking news, from the devastating wildfires that have broken out in recent years to the gunman on the La Cumbre overpass that shut down Highway 101, during which KJEE had the most exciting and informative coverage available. That morning’s program was peppered with updates from KEYT’s ubiquitous John Palminteri and bolstered by Lundquist’s lively reporting, as he’d ridden his bicycle to the scene and delivered dispatches as it unfolded.
But all that’s not lost with this change, said Meade, explaining that the station will continue to have news coverage, traffic updates, and surf reports. “It’s not like we’re completely abandoning Santa Barbara by putting on a syndicated product,” he said. He also pointed to KJEE’s popular syndication of “Loveline” every night as a testament to how well Kevin and Bean might work out in the morning.
For Fischer, originally from Simi Valley, the move to KVYB will put him in a much larger market - his home market no less - at a time where many stations are abandoning live hosts, and all stations are operating on a skeleton crew. And he will be working at the largest radio station west of the Mississippi River. KVYB - owned by Cumulus Media, the second largest radio company in the United States and also the owner/operator of KRUZ 97.5 FM and Magic 106.3 FM - operates a signal of 105,000 watts, an amount grandfathered in before the Federal Communications Commission capped wattage at 100,000 for radio stations. The station had been on the lookout for a new morning host since the previous one left two months ago, said Pollock, explaining that timing was perfect for the transition. “I couldn’t be more excited for Spencer to join 103.3,” said Pollock.
The station falls under the rhythmic contemporary format, which means more hip-hop, urban pop, and rap for Fischer, a genre he’s comfortable with due to his deejaying. It should also fit in with hot morning show topics a little better than KJEE’s alternative rock format. “We sit there [at KJEE] and talk about Lady Gaga and Kanye West because they’re in the news, but then we put on a song by the Foo Fighters,” explained Fischer, who said his preset car radio stations now feature KJEE first with KVYB in the number two spot. “I’m excited. I’m truly fortunate.”

Sad to hear that Spencer and Adam are leaving, but I sure won't miss John Palminteri's morning news schlock!

I will never tune in to 92.9 ever. Again. Sorry Phat J (You're cool!)

What really sucks.. is that dave is really cool too.. it sucks that he is beholden to the value of the dollar which is declining due to the Federal Reserve which helps to amass money and power the largest of corporations in order to control the industry (see HR 1207, we should Audit the Fed!! Also Watch "Conspiracy Theory" episode 5 by Jesse Ventura about the Bilderberg Group, also don't blame capitalism, blame corporatism!)

Bummer! I liked the morning show and was sad to see Jenny go and now Spencer and Adam. Best wishes to all! KVYB comes in with crystal clarity on the mesa but I don't think I can stand the music. Yet Spencer's morning show may be all talk, so I'll check it out.

Darn it! I started listening to KJEE when Matt left KTYD. I started listening because of Spencer and Adam's morning show. If I wanted to listen to a generic, non-local morning show, I can tune into satelite radio. Stupid move KJEE execs. Back to listening to the songs on my iPod.

What a loss. In the 10+ years I've lived here I've seen some of the best features of SB slowly SELL OUT and become more bland and Impersonal from back when KRUZ was independently run (and at 103.3). I'm tired of seeing greed replace local talent and the personal charm of SB with bland and "safe" recorded shows. Kevin & Bean lost their edge decades ago...they were best back when they introduced Michael the Maintence Man.
We should be promoting the type of show Spencer and Adam had which should be syndicates To K-ROQ. K&B wish they had the kind of show Spencer and Adam did. BIG MISTAKE! HUGE...enormous!!!
BIG mistake! Huge...Enormous!

I have listened to Spencer and Adam for years-first as a student when I commuted to UCSB, now as I commute to work and I am so disappointed. However I will absolutely be following Spencer over to 103.3 and I hope that Adam will be able to join him! I will never listen to KJEE ever again-already deleted it from my car radio!!!

What bad news to start the new year off with. I must not have been paying attention because the decision was made in november and this is the first I had heard of the change. Spencer, Adam, and Jenny had a great magic of chemistry that kept things lively, funny and edgy. Their snide, heavily critical comments on popular culture and current events were unique on the radio scene and will be missed. 2010 marks a goodbye to an era. I'll have to tune in to Spencer on 103.3 and see what the Kevin and Bean show is like.

This is horrible. My entire morning routine for the past 10 years, listening to the morning show as I got ready for my day, just got flushed. 92.9 is the only station in town worth my time and now it just got worse. Spencer has had some good co-hosts in the past, Big Lou & Dakota, and some bad ones, Hoke (sp?) was horrible, but when he & Adam got together it was morning show gold, at least in my opinion. There are worse things going on in the world, but this is a sad day.
Thanks Spencer & Adam & Big Lou & all the rest who've occupied the morning show seats over the years.

Yaaaaaaaaaaawn . . . . aerial radio, Eff Em, nonetheless, how quaint. Everyone---raise your hand who stopped listening to the same pathetic 5 bad songs being beamed directly from the Dinosaur Age (The New Dinosaur Age as well) via our local "rock" stations.
Call aerial radio what it is: Ad-dio. Non-stop blaring crapoid ads for crap I don't want, need, or care about. KCSB, NPR, KDB are the only ones worth half a tart. KTYD is even worse than KJEE, if that's possible.
Kevin & Bean! Wow. Never heard of them. Don't wanna hear of them. Would rather listen to 1340AM's hilarious Stephanie Miller during that time slot.
KJEE? Remember when they came to town and that disaffected drug-wavy monotonal voice said the call letters every half hour or so? Now look. All grown up and overtaken by the same model that killed Ad-dio in the first place. Wanker-Undie-dweeb-whiner music, oh boy!
I'll take silence instead, thank you very much.

Just like daily newspapers have gradually lost their connection to the communities they serve due to newsroom downsizing and corporate ownership, FM radio began its long decline when corporate playlists became the norm. At one time DJs would bring their own albums into the studio and create a following through their taste in music, including introducing listeners to local and regional bands. Now radio has zero connection to the 'hit parade' and no longer has the power to make songs hits and unknown musicians stars, nor any interest in creating original local programming. Centralized, corporate ownership of media is killing culture and dumbing down the citizenry.

I really enjoyed the Spencer and Adam morning show and Jenny was great, as well. In fact, it's the only time I really ever listen to KJEE. I also enjoyed John P's "schlock" as well. They all played so well off of eachother! I can't comprehend how the execs at this station ever thought this was a good move. They're one step away from being forced to sell, I bet.

Boo! This was Santa Barbara's best morning show, a mix of quirky local content and small town humor. It can not be replaced by some dudes piped in from LA. KJEE is making a big mistake with this one, this will lead to a broken connection between the listeners and the station that can not be replaced. Boo, KJEE, boo.

I might not be excited about the loss of locally made programming, but I am, for one, excited about the end of Adam and Spencer on KJEE.
Over the past year, the show has considerably gone down in quality (e.g. 30 min schticks such as "Bird vs. Bum" where Adam would put an Egg McMuffin out on a table and wager whether a bird would get to it before a bum would; daily hour long discussions about Tiger Woods and Michael Jackson, whereas other programs just devoted 15 or so minutes to such inane topics). No matter your lack of funding, the ability to come up with stimulating discussions, topics, and listener-involved games should not have been neglected. When quality is present, more listeners will always be attracted.
Not to mention so many, many errant facts given during the show about the newer bands that they give airtime. If the station wants to keep up with trends in the "modern rock world," I'm not seeing it. That might not be Adam's and/or Spencer's fault as so much as the problems with main stream rock radio stations. STOP playing Nirvana or Sublime for the 10,000 time and STOP hiring deejay's with blonde, streaked hair and wallet chains. It's not the '90s or even the Oughts anymore.
Thank you. End rant.

KJEE owners,
Syndication has always failed in SB.
Your DJ's were good, but the music was pretty one-dimensional. Brad J. made your station cause he knew what tunes to spin. There are lots of good modern rock songs out there but you don't often here them on KJEE.
Music first.

THANK YOU KJEE!
I received a new speaker docking station for my iphone for the holidays. Unfortunately, the only radio that I had left in the house was blocking the space for the new speakers. The only reason I kept the radio there was for the morning show whilst I drank my coffee. Now that the morning show is gone, I can get rid of the radio! Streaming KCRW/KEXP all the way! (much better indy music anyway). There is no need to listen to KJEE any more.
KJEE's morning show provided local traffic, news and a local perspective. Palmintery is Prime Time, Adam's stupid (but often funny commentary) on local and national issues, Spencer holding them all together.
BTW... listened to that new show on the way into work this morning just to see. Heard 15min of TMZ bs. What a FAIL move KJEE. F.A.I.L!
Spencer, Adam, Palmintary, Doug, Blazer... all the best to you.
KJEE... sorry to see you go.

No more KJEE for me. The morning show was a treat for my morning commute. Had me entertained and laughing always. I cannot listen to the replacement DJ's. They are not witty, they are bland and talk on endlessly about nothing. The first time I listened to them they made a joke about how the movie Avatar is just like how Native American land was taken, they got smallpox, and all their bison were killed. How is this comic material? Big mistake, KJEE. You will lose thousands of listeners. Thanks to Spencer and Adam for giving me so much fun in the morning. KJEE is deleted from my presets.

I don't want to hear a couple of idiots from L.A., and this Kevin and Bean are just that - I would prefer to listen to local idiots. My morning commute takes less than 10 minutes so I never had much time to listen to the show but the I enjoyed it because it was quirky and especially because it was local. I always thought it was funny that their traffic report was just a joke with Blazer reporting from lawnmower 5. It's the antithesis of L.A. radio where traffic reports actually matter. Their banter with "The Palm" and the Movie Guy was funny too. My wife and I had been listening to KJEE in the morning since the days of Brad and DM in the mid-90's. I guess I'll have to become another NPR listener...
