In the race to be the next mayor of Santa Barbara, Councilmember Helene Schneider enjoys a substantially larger campaign war chest than her rival, Councilmember Iya Falcone. Schneider reported having $15,854 in the bank, while Falcone reported a balance of $509. Falcone’s just-released reports indicate she raised $2,450 throughout 2008 for her mayoral campaign, while Schneider raised $6,800, in addition to the funds both candidates transferred from City Council campaign committees.

Last Tuesday, 2/3, the Santa Barbara City Council authorized the Finance Director to move forward with a professional agreement with Ideocore, a public opinion research firm, to conduct a public education study to determine the feasibility of a proposed Foodscraps Recovery and Composting Program. The city hopes to implement the composting program to conserve space in local landfills and further its long-term sustainability goals. The cost for the firm’s services should not exceed $45,750 according to the City Council.

Renowned sculptor Aris Demetrios, who lives and works in Montecito, has been selected as the first artist to exhibit in Santa Barbara’s newest public garden, Jardin de las Granadas, at 21 E. Anapamu Street. Demetrios’s work is the first installment in a rotating outdoor sculpture exhibition that will showcase a new sculptor every four months. (/granadajardin)
