Yahoo!Blue Note Records: 70th Anniversary
To commemorate the Blue Note label’s thus-far seven decades in action, an all-star group is hitting the road to support the new album Mosaic: A Celebration of Blue Note Records. Leading the band is the tasteful and nimble pianist Bill Charlap, and the rest of the lineup includes the great trumpeter Nicholas Payton, saxists Ravi Coltrane and Steve Wilson, guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Peter Washington, and drummer Lewis Nash. Coryell, Auger, and Sample Trio
If the family names ring a bell in this trio, it has to do with next generation players on the jazz and rock circuits: guitarist Julian Coryell is Larry’s son, drummer Karma Auger is Brian’s son, and bassist Nicklas Sample is Joe’s son. Kurt Elling in Dedicated to You
Consummate jazz vocalist Kurt Elling pays a respectful visit to a historic 1963 meeting in jazz, when John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman collaborated on one of the greatest ballad-making sessions in history. With tenor saxist Ernie Watts playing the role of Coltrane, and backed by Elling’s longtime allies, pianist Laurence Hobgood’s trio. Thu., Feb. 12, 8pm. Lobero Theatre, 33 E. Juan de Marcos and the Afro-Cuban All Stars

Five Peace Band
Just in the last year and change, we’ve caught both iconic guitarist John McLaughlin and keyboardist Chick Corea in town—McLaughlin with his electrified band at the Lobero and Corea in an improvisational outing with Jack DeJohnette and vocalist Bobby McFerrin at the Granada last spring. This season, the bandleaders collaborate in the Five Peace Band, and are joined by bassist Christian McBride, alto saxist Kenny Garrett, and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta. Fri., Mar. 20, 8pm. Ron Carter Trio
One of the most important and influential jazz bassists alive, Ron Carter may still be best known as the low-range one-fifth of the great Miles Davis Quintet of the mid ’60s, but the bassist’s subsequent career—as sideman and leader—has covered a lot of ground and veered in many different artistic directions. For this drummer-less trio setting, Carter is joined by pianist Mulgrew Miller and guitarist Russell Malone, who share with Carter a mastery of their respective instruments. Thu., Mar. 26, 8pm. Critic’s Pick: Sonny Rollins
Sonny Rollins is the once and current champion improviser on the planet. Any season Sonny comes to town, the jazz muse is with us. Rollins, who last played Campbell Hall in 2006, returns on the heels of the release of Road Shows, Vol. 1, a compilation of live recordings. Critics and other jazz lovers are fairly gaga over the album, partly because it captures the special magic Rollins brings to the stage. Expect more of the same at UCSB. Mon., Apr. 27, 8pm.
