Gaucho Cagers Open Big West at Cal Poly

TOP SPORTING EVENTS: DECEMBER 30-JANUARY 9

Westmont College’s basketball teams are on the verge of combining for more than 20 victories as they enter the New Year. The Warrior men (8-2) will host UC Merced in the championship game of the Tom Byron Classic tonight (Fri., Dec. 30), after the Warrior women (11-1) take on CSU Maritime in the GSAC Challenge. On Thursday night, Westmont routed Trinity International (IL) 91-69 in the Byron semifinals and rolled past Pacific Union 85-45 in the women’s game.

UCSB’s Big West Conference openers are sandwiched around New Year’s Day. The Gaucho women travel to San Luis Obispo on Saturday to play Cal Poly. Monday night’s Gaucho men’s game at Cal Poly will be televised on KSBY (Channel 6).

To get 2012 off to a running start, sign up for the annual Resolution Day 5K/10K on Sunday (Jan. 1). The starting line has been moved from Chase Palm Park to Leadbetter Beach because of the Sunday art show on Cabrillo Boulevard.

High school teams will begin league play next week in basketball and soccer.
