Cox Communications Seeks Nominations for Conservation Champions

Community will Vote Online, Two Champions to be Unveiled On Earth Day

Beginning January 12 through February 11, Cox Cares, the community outreach arm of Cox Communications in Orange Coast, will accept nominations for the company’s Cox Conservation Champions program. Nominations will be accepted through 5 p.m. PST.

This awards program honors individuals who work to create, preserve, improve or enhance the shared outdoor places in our communities. Volunteers of all ages who reside within Cox Orange Coast’s service may apply or be nominated for a Conservation Champion award.

Cox Orange Coast will honor two Champions: a minor and an adult, who will be selected through online voting, and honored on Earth Day on April 22.

“Cox Orange Coast is proud to recognize our community’s most active conservationists as they make a difference in preserving our natural resources through beautification projects, advocacy, education or other types of community outreach,” said Gail Bongcaras, community relations manager of Cox in Orange Coast. “By involving the entire community in selecting winners, we hope to raise awareness throughout our community of the importance of all of us being stewards of our environment.”

A panel of Cox associates and civic leaders within Cox Orange Coast’s conservation field, will select six finalists – three for both the adult and minor categories. Cox Cares will feature profiles of the finalists, and the public can vote online for two champions.

Once the voting period ends, the adult and minor finalists with the most votes will be selected as the Cox Cares Conservation Champions for 2011. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive $2,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively, to donate to a local environmental non-profit organization of their choice within the service area of Cox Orange Coast. The organization must be a registered 501(c)(3).

Established in 2000, Cox Cares has donated nearly $700,000 to more than 95 local nonprofit organizations through in-kind and direct cash support, much of which is derived from the contributions of Cox Orange Coast’s employees. Along with the Conservation Champions Program, the Cox Cares will continue to support the needs of youth and seniors, while promoting social issues, art, science and technology through a wide range of support activities for both organizations and individuals engaged in business and education. Cox is not simply a trusted provider in business, but also a partner in building a proud community.
